Brief History
From its first releases, in 1996, DreamWorks Records has established itself as a music company dedicated to exceptional
artistry and the nurturing of long-term careers. This focus has yielded critical acclaim and creative innovation across an array of genres, as well as major awards, #1 hits and multiplatinum albums.
DreamWorks Records' many aesthetic tributaries encompass rock and pop (including Lifehouse, Papa Roach, Alien Ant Farm,
Jimmy Eat World, Nelly Furtado, Rufus Wainwright and eels); country (Toby Keith, Jessica Andrews, Darryl Worley); urban
(The Isley Brothers, Floetry); comedy (Chris Rock); film scores and soundtracks (Shrek, Almost Famous,
American Beauty, Saving Private Ryan, The Prince of Egypt); and Broadway cast recordings
(Rent).
The company has enjoyed numerous Recording Assoc. of America certifications. Among them are triple-platinum awards for
Toby Keith's Unleashed and Papa Roach's Infest; double-platinum honors for Keith's SHOCKN' Y'ALL
and Pull My Chain, Nelly Furtado's Whoa, Nelly!, Lifehouse's No Name Face, Shrek – Music From
The Original Motion Picture, Rent – Original Broadway Cast Recording and Chris Rock's "Bring The Pain"
DVD/VHS; platinum designations for Jimmy Eat World's Jimmy Eat World, The Isley Brothers' Eternal, Alien
Ant Farm's ANThology, Powerman 5000's Tonight the Stars Revolt! and Keith's How Do You Like Me
Now?!; and gold status for Furtado's Folklore, Floetry's Floetic; the Isleys' Body Kiss, Darryl
Worley's Have You Forgotten?, AFI's Sing The Sorrow, The All-American Rejects' eponymous debut and DVD/VHS
"Live From Oklahoma … The Too Bad for Hell DVD!," Papa Roach's lovehatetragedy, Jessica Andrews' Who I Am
and the soundtrack to "Almost Famous."
DreamWorks Records has garnered other important laurels as well. Chris Rock scored the label's first Grammy Award, for
Best Comedy Album for Roll With the New (he nabbed a statuette in the same category for follow-up Bigger &
Blacker). Other Grammy highlights include Nelly Furtado's win in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
for "I'm Like a Bird," from Whoa, Nelly!, and the award for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion
Picture or Television, which went to Saving Private Ryan – Music From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack,
composed by John Williams.
DreamWorks has topped the charts* with Floetry's "Say Yes" (R&B Adult), from Floetic; Boomkat's "The
Wreckoning" (Hot Dance Music/Club Play), from boomkatalog one; Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" (Modern Rock,
Modern AC), from Jimmy Eat World; Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" (Modern Rock), from ANThology;
Lifehouse's "Hanging by a Moment" (Modern Rock), from No Name Face; Jessica Andrews' "Who I Am" (Hot Country),
from Who I Am; Papa Roach's "Last Resort" (Modern and Active Rock), from Infest; Nelly Furtado's "Turn off
the Light" (Hot Dance Music/Club Play), from Whoa, Nelly!; and eels' "Novocaine for the Soul" (Modern Rock), from
Beautiful Freak.
Toby Keith is something of a phenomenon in this area, having racked up #1s for "How Do You Like Me Now?!" and "You
Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This" (both Hot Country), from How Do You Like Me Now?!; his LP Pull My Chain (Top
Country Albums) and that disc's "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight," "I Wanna Talk About Me" and "My List" (all Hot
Country); "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Ugly American)," "Who's Your Daddy?" and "Beer for My Horses" (all
Hot Country), from his #1 Unleashed (Billboard 200, Top Country); and "I Love This Bar" (Hot Country) from the #1
SHOCK'N Y'ALL (Billboard 200, Top Country). Darryl Worley's I Miss My Friend also hit #1 on the Top
Country chart, with the title track occupying that spot on the Hot Country list, as did "Have You Forgotten?" from the
like-titled CD, itself #1 (Top Country). The Isley Brothers' Eternal rose to #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart;
their Body Kiss CD debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.
Based in Los Angeles (with offices in Nashville, New York and London), DreamWorks Records is headed by Mo Ostin, Lenny
